what is the definition of an ethnic group,- a language, customs and culture (customs, dress, food, language.) (define that to primary age children without using adult definitions!! The PP could also include the Tower of Babel story, beginning of cultures .

Hero Story
Hudson Taylor
another cool story
straight out of the Hero storiesThe Boy Who Wanted to Be a MissionaryFive-year-old Hudson Taylor sat at the dinner
table with his family. The adults were talking about
foreign countries. Hudson was fascinated.
However, he dared not speak unless someone
spoke to him first.
“What do you want to be when you grow up?”
someone finally asked. “I want to be a missionary
to China,” he answered right away. His family
smiled at his little-boy dreams.
But Hudson was right. God did not let him
forget his childhood wish. At 18, he began to
study seriously to be a missionary to China
He started learning Chinese. He could not
afford a tutor or a Chinese dictionary, so he
bought small copies of the gospels of Luke and
Matthew in Chinese. By studying these, and
comparing them with his English dictionary, he
made his own dictionary with over 600 Chinese
characters.
Hudson trained himself to live very simply. He
sold his soft feather mattress, and bought an old,
hard, lumpy one to sleep on. He ate only a loaf of
bread and a pound of apples each day. And he
gave away almost everything he owned.
Hudson also studied medicine in school,
working as a doctor’s assistant to learn all he
could. He was paid for his assistant’s job, but not
very much.
Most importantly, Hudson began to train
himself to trust in God through prayer. He decided
to always ask God and not to tell other people,
when he had needs. He knew God could be
trusted.
One day, Hudson had only half a crown left,
worth about a dollar. Hudson visited a poor part of
town, where he met a worried man. His wife was
very sick. He and his family had no money at all
and could not even afford to eat. Would Hudsonplease come and pray for her?Hudson followed the man into his poor home. There lay the sick woman with a tiny, three-dayKairos for Kids Kairos Hero Story Script #2Kairos Hero Story Page 2-2old baby, and several hungry children. “If only I
had enough money,” thought Hudson, “I would
share it with them.”
When Hudson knelt to pray for the woman,
something felt wrong in his heart. Did Hudson
really trust God to provide for him? Then why
could he not give his last coin to this family?
Hudson reached into his pocket and offered
the half crown to the man. Then Hudson prayed
for the woman. He went home, pockets empty.
The next day, Hudson received a surprise
package in the mail. It had a pair of gloves and
two coins worth about four dollars. It was more
than enough for him to live on for several weeks.
Later, he also learned that the sick womanrecovered. Hudson was learning he could alwaystrust God. He would need these lessons as amissionary, too.Fitting In with the ChineseAt the age of 21, Hudson traveled from
England to Shanghai, China -- a 5-month journey
by boat. The city where he began his work did not
feel much like home to begin with.
First of all, he could hardly speak the
language. How would he make friends? Hudson
worked hard to learn Chinese, but he often felt
lonely during his first year or two in China.
The people were also very curious about
Hudson’s clothes and his blond hair. So curious,
in fact, that they hardly listened to what he had to
say. How could he tell them about Jesus if they
would not listen?
Hudson had an idea. He visited a barber, who
shaved off almost all of Hudson’s light colored
hair. Then, he dyed the rest black and braided
that together with a long, Chinese braid, reaching
most of the way down his back.
Hudson put on a Chinese hat, exchanged his
English pants for baggy blue pantaloons, and
wore a heavy silk jacket. He even wore flat
Chinese shoes with toes that pointed up. Now,
when Hudson walked around town in his new
outfit, the people thought that he was Chinese. He
learned the language much faster, practicing with
real Chinese people.
His missionary friends thought he was crazy.
Most of them thought the Chinese should learn to
dress like the English, not the other way around.
But Hudson knew that dressing like a Chinese
person would help him tell more people about
Jesus.
As he became fluent in the Chinese language,
he began to travel into other cities. Many of the
other missionaries only wanted to work in thecoastal cities. Hudson’s heart was to reach ALLCHINESE with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Most ofthem lived in cities far from the coast. Why did you not come sooner? One day, a Buddhist leader joined the meeting.
He listened closely to Hudson, now dressed as a
Chinese scholar. As he heard the story of Jesus’
death on the cross and how he forgives sins, the
man knew he was hearing the truth of God. He
believed in Jesus to forgive his sin and give him
eternal life.
Afterwards, the man came to ask a question.
“How long have you known this truth in your
country?” Hudson knew that English people had
believed in Jesus for hundreds of years. “We have
known it for a very long time,” admitted Hudson.
“My father also wanted to know the truth, and
he died without finding it,” said the man. “Why?
Why, did you not come sooner?”
Hudson felt sad for this man’s father. And he
felt sad for the thousands of other Chinese people
who were dying every day without hearing the
truth about Jesus.
On one trip back to England, Hudson was
especially worried. He could see the large map of
China in his mind: nine huge provinces, most of
them bigger than England itself. How would all
those millions of people hear about Jesus?
No matter how hard he and his wife, Maria,
worked, they could never reach all those people
with the gospel in his lifetime. What should he do?
Suddenly he had an idea. He prayed and
asked God to send 24 new missionaries with him
to China. But just like when Hudson was
practicing to be a missionary, he did not tell
anyone about his prayer. He just prayed.
One. Two. Three. Four … By the time Maria
and Hudson sailed back to China, they had 15
new missionaries with them. Nine more came
later. This was the beginning of the China Inland
Mission, now called OMF (Overseas Missionary
Fellowship).
As Hudson trusted God, God did even more.
During Hudson Taylor’s lifetime, they senthundreds and hundreds of missionaries out to allparts of China to reach those who had neverheard of Jesus before.Ending DiscussionNow it is your turn to tell me what you think.•Would you want to live like Hudson did?
